Keeping Critters Out of Your Trash

Animals want to get into your trash cans all year round, but they’re especially motivated around the holiday season.

All that delicious holiday home cooking you’re doing for family and friends produces an exceptional amount of food scraps. If you don’t do something to stop them, raccoons and other critters will gladly knock over your cans and spill your garbage to get to those tasty scraps.

Here are a few tips on how to keep critters out of the trash around the holidays and all year
round:

Rope or Bungee Cord – Secure the lid of your trash can with a rope or bungee cord. Just make sure to untie it the morning of trash pickup day.

Weigh Down the Lid – If you don’t have a rope or bungee cord to tie over the lid, try weighing it down with a rock, cinder block, or some other item that’s too heavy for an animal to move.

A Quick Rinse -- Rinsing out your bins will clear away some of the residual smells of already removed food scraps and trash. After Thanksgiving and after Christmas are both great times to hose out the bins for a fresh start. There’s no need to do a full power wash.

Install Motion Detecting Lights – Here’s a tip we got from a company that does trash pickup in North Denver: most nosey critters, including raccoons, prefer to get into the trash under the cover of darkness. Placing a motion detecting light next to your bins might be enough to scare them away.
